Cockerill resigned to losing coach O'Connor to Leinster

LEICESTER Tigers' Richard Cockerill believes there is the "likelihood" Australian Matt O'Connor will move to Leinster in the summer.

"I am aware of the interest in Matt. He's been over to see them. It is a fantastic job," said Cockerill, director of rugby at the Premiership club.

"He's been very good for us for the last five years. He has ambitions to coach international rugby. I suppose the next step for him is to go and do a head coach's job at a big club. If he goes to Leinster, which is probably the possibility, or the likelihood, that will happen. He goes with our best wishes. He's done a fantastic job for Leicester."

The 42-year-old Australian will have to blend into the established Leinster coaching team as skills and kicking coach Richie Murphy and forwards coach Jono Gibbes are signed to the end of the season 2013/2014.

Number two to Cockerill at Leicester, this is O'Connor's chance to take complete charge of a club that can challenge for European and domestic honours.

Cockerill and O'Connor have led Tigers to Premiership finals in each of their four seasons at Leicester.
