Bowe woe could let Luke in

One man's misfortune can become another man's opportunity, writes Des Berry.

The news that Tommy Bowe's season has ended with surgery in Ireland yesterday for the removal of a haematoma, that has pushed into his kidney and caused raised blood pressure, could mean a return to the Ireland squad for Leinster's Luke Fitzgerald (pictured) in New Zealand in June.

Fitzgerald is currently involved in contract negotiations with the Irish Rugby Football Union, which is believed to have offered him a 30pc reduction in his salary.

The lightning left wing has the opportunity to return pressure on the Union by making a positive impression against Cardiff Blues in the Heineken Cup quarter-final before a packed Aviva Stadium this evening.

The Leinster management does expect some progress to be made, one way or the other, next week.
