Blitz a storming success

LAST week over 100 secondary school girls took to the field for their first ever tag rugby blitz.

DCU was the venue with the DCU women's rugby team the organisers on a lovely sunny day that was also supported by Powerade, the DCU Access service and the 98FM Thunders.

The girls had a taster of the game with training sessions that were conducted by DCU Women's Rugby and Leinster Rugby CRO Jack Hanratty who commented: "It is one thing going to a school conducting a programme but this gives the players not only an opportunity to get taught by current women's rugby players but also the chance to visit one of Ireland's universities."

The DCU Women's team are hoping that this will be the start of the interest for the girls and hopefully one day play for the university team.

Last Saturday saw a big turnout at Kirwan Park, as the Heineken Cup made a visit as part of the Salmo U12's 'Trophy Day' fundraiser for their forthcoming London Irish trip. Blue was the colour as the Leinster supporters lined up in their droves to get their photograph taken with the Heineken Cup. Other trophies on show on the day included the Magners League, The Setanta Cup, The Liam McCarthy Cup and the Airtricity League.

Come and see the Leinster squad train up close at an open training session in Donnybrook next Wednesday, April 11, at 10.30am in the RDS.

The team will train for approximately one hour before supporters will get the chance to meet a selection of players and get autographs and photographs once training is completed.

All Leinster supporters are welcome and admission is free.

Please note there is no parking in the ground and gates open at 10.30am, when the session starts.

Earlier this month, the Railway Union RFC Social Committee announced details of the annual Dinner-Dance, the highlight of the Club's social calendar.

Not long after that, the Promotions and Marketing Committee released details of 'Modelizers', a Facebook competition in which club members battled it out to win a date to the Dinner-Dance with a top Irish model, Grace Fox -- an Assets model and star of the FBD Car Insurance Commercial.

Obviously, nominations flooded the Railway Union RFC email account and the Committee whittled these down to seven eligible, attractive and charming candidates!

Canvassing began as each candidate had to win the most comments left on the competition photograph on the Railway Facebook page.

This week, the finalists are creating videos, in which they get to demonstrate their creativity as they record a message as to why they are the best man for the job. The winner of the video challenge gets an extra 20 votes to help aid his cause.

The winner will be announced on Saturday 7th April, and voting is open until then.

Only fans of the Railway Union RFC facebook page are eligible to vote and any 'New Likes' count for double votes.

See www.facebook.com/railwayunionrfc to 'like' the page and engage in the Modelizers competition.
