Athy get in on the act

Scoil Phádraig Naofa of Athy recently held a tag rugby blitz for over 50 fourth class students. The blitz was held on the large all-weather pitch facility shared by four local schools and was the culmination of an eight-week tag programme with these classes run by Joe Carbery, Athy RFC CCRO.

Games were played in good spirit and at a very competitive level.

The players were divided up into four teams with each team taking the name of one of the four provinces.

The Leinster team came through as the only unbeaten side. It is hoped that, through blitzes such as these, local students will be encouraged to take up rugby at the Athy Rugby Club in an area that is strong in both football and soccer.

A thank-you must also go out to the fourth class teachers, Ms Lawlor and Mr Carbery (who also reffed), as well as the principal of Scoil Phádraig Naofa Mr O'Gormon who is very supportive of the programme in the school.
