Wonders never cease with champion Ward

WONDER WOMAN -- Ger Ward, one of the greatest ambassadors that the game of Pitch and Putt has ever known.

The pride of Portmarnock is just one victory away from setting an all-time record in the sport's Majors.

Her brilliant National Strokeplay triumph at Cunnigar in Dungarvan brought her a 14th National title.

Ger has now collected six Strokeplay and eight Matchplay crowns, a truly outstanding achievement.

Incredibly, her first National award came back in 1984 when she lifted the Matchplay prize, and she is one of a select group of women who have captured the Strokeplay and the Matchplay in the same year -- 1994. Ger now stands alongside the Woodvale and Cork legend, Claire Keating, who enjoyed such marvellous success in the 1960s and '70s.

Ger's latest victory combined experience and craft, as National Pitch and Putt PRO, Padraig O'Shea, relates: "Her performance was so solid on a course where it's so easy to drop shots.

"The 18th has a very attractive water feature, but it can prove so often to be the graveyard of so many hopes."

There was no chance of that happening to Dublin's leading lady, who finished with an impressive 15 under par.

Ger's record haul reads: National Strokeplay Champion: 2010, 2008, 2007, 2004, 2003, 1994. National Matchplay Champion: 2007, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1990, 1986, 1985, 1984.
