Walsh lashes AIBA for Ward Olympics snub

THE IABA have received confirmation that Joe Ward will not be competing at the 2012 London Olympics.

It was hoped Ward would qualify as a 'next best boxer' following his performance at the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Ward lost his last-16 81kg bout on a countback.

However, the IABA received a statement from the AIBA confirming that "we regrettably found out that your boxer does not meet the qualification to be the 'Next Best Boxer' in your continent."

Head coach Billy Walsh has stated that he is extremely disappointed with this decision.

"I just don't understand the statement," he said. "To me it would appear to indicate that the place went to the next best boxer but Joe is ranked No 5 in the world and the only European above him is a Russian and he has already qualified for the Olympic Games.

"All I can say it is that it is very disappointing."
