Naas United FC...................2

Suncroft AFC.....................1

Naas United gained three valuable points in their quest to retain the CR Wynne Feeds Senior division title on Sunday when they narrowly defeated a battling Suncroft AFC by the odd goal in three to close the gap on frontrunners Castle Villa and Woodstock Celts.

From the tip-off the home side put the visitors under pressure and took the lead after 30 seconds when Suncroft lost possession in midfield and gave away a free-kick from 35 yards out.

Eoin Giblin's quickly taken free-kick found Andrew Sheridan free at the back post and his cross goal header deceived 'Croft 'keeper Ciaran Killaly to end up in the top corner and put the home side 1-0 up.

The visitors didn't let this early goal deter them. They kept the pressure on United and should have restored parity on 11 minutes when a long ball from Gary Connolly found Ian Byrne unmarked in the Naas 18-yard box.

His close-range header beat 'keeper Aaron Smith but went agonisingly wide of the left post.

The visitors, with their tails up now, continued to press and were unlucky time and time again with chances from Dylan Connolly forcing a fantastic fingertip save from Naas 'keeper Smith.

Naas United came out with determination but on 57 minutes Suncroft were rewarded for their efforts and got the all-important equaliser when Naas were slow to clear and Dylan Connolly nipped in with a near post header, giving Smith no chance.

Midway through the half both sides made substitutions in an effort to inject more pace into the game.

Willie Hayes was brought on by the visitors and the home side introduced Jamie Lambe and Dean Fennessy.

Straight away these changes brought chances for both sides. But disaster struck for the visitors with 10 remaining.

A low cross into the area by Naas substitute Lambe caused consternation in the 'Croft area which saw Willie Hayes deflect into his own net while under pressure from the inrushing Saunders, giving the Naas a 2-1 victory.
