UCD leading Dubs charge in Limerick

The 2012 Intervarsities is taking place in the University of Limerick this weekend with a large representation from the capital and surrounding areas.

Ireland's premier third-level basketball competition is set for its 60th instalment and will feature 36 teams, participating in a massive 66 games at the impressive University Arena in Limerick.

Some of the colleges expected to be in the running for the top honours include UCD in the men's 'A' grade, with their squad largely consisting of the team that features weekly in the Nivea For Men's SuperLeague.

Dublin Business School are another side tipped to make a real impression in the 'A' grade with a number of their players on the back of National Cup glory with Dublin Thunder earlier this year. DCU will also be hoping for better fortunes after their SuperLeague men suffered defeat in the final of the recent Nivea For Men's SuperLeague to UL Eagles.

In the women's grade, UCD and DCU will be hoping to oust the highly fancied duo of UL and UCC Demons. There is no shortage of experience in either side with Irish international Sarah Woods on duty for UCD, while Dublin GAA star Lindsey Peat will be lining out for DCU after returning to college this year.

"It's a massive competition in terms of numbers and history and will feature some of the best talent this country has to offer," said Director of Colleges Basketball Noreen O'Connell.

"It's never been so competitive and the Dublin colleges, who feature some household names from the SuperLeague, are expected to feature highly."

This year's competition will have no shortage of entertainment as the Crazy Dunkers will make an appearance. The Crazy Dunkers are renowned for entertaining basketball fans and have featured at some of the world's biggest basketball events.
