Seventh heaven for Chavez in Lee fight

BOXING: Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr recovered from a slow start due to leg cramps to stop Andy Lee in the seventh round to retain the WBC middleweight title on Saturday.

A right uppercut by Chavez snapped Lee's head upwards and sideways and Chavez connected with a barrage of punches before referee Laurence Cole intervened and waved an end to the fight.

With the victory, Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KOs) puts himself in position for a title-unification fight with recognised world middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Nalbandian disqualified

TENNIS: David Nalbandian could be up to £43,000 out of pocket after being disqualified from the final of the AEGON Championships at Queen's for kicking an advertising board at a line judge.

Nalbandian lost his temper in the second set against Marin Cilic. The Argentinian kicked an advertising hoarding in front of the chair of line judge Andrew McDougall, which ploughed straight in to McDougall's shin, causing an inch-long gash.

Swiss win for Rui Costa

CYCLING: Rui Costa won the Tour de Suisse after finishing the ninth and final stage in the main group alongside Frank Schleck. The Movistar rider had headed into the last day of racing with a 14-second lead over Schleck. Nicolas Roche achieved his aim of a top 10 finish by coming 10th overall.

Rally glory for Jennings

AUTO: Garry Jennings and Neil Doherty completed their dream debut in a World Rally Car when they drove their Subaru Impreza to victory in the the Topaz Donegal International Rally, 81 seconds ahead of Seamus Leonard and John McCafferty at Letterkenny.

Puspure sixth in Munich

ROWING: Olympic sculler Sanita Puspure was Ireland's only participant in yesterday's finals at the World Cup regatta in Munich, where she came up against a world-class field and finished sixth.
