Rising star Clancy 'rider of year'

PERFORMANCES towards the latter end of the cycling season have brought recognition for the up-and-coming Stephen Clancy of Limerick CC.

Clancy may have started the season in the lower ranks of the cycling categories, and coming out of the Junior section last season, nothing was expected of the jovial racer from the city of Limerick.

But with the aid of a new coach, Paddy Doran, he has come up trumps and finished the season in the top echelon. Going from the third to the first category in one season is no mean feat.

The selectors gave him his big break when he lined out with the U23 development squad in the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan, held at Easter in Co Kerry.

Luck was on his side as Easter was later than usual this season and, with some quality results in the early weeks of March, Clancy was marked out as a rising star.

Tonight, in Dublin, at the annual awards of Cycling Ireland, he will receive recognition as the best Irish-based male rider of the year.

With that recognition under his belt, he could soon be on the move. Who knows, maybe he'll go on to make his name in the European scene.
