Stage two of the FBD Insurance Rás was abandoned with 50km remaining yesterday after a major incident involving the peloton and a public vehicle saw five riders carted to hospital, one with part of his finger missing, writes Tommy Campbell.
Race leader Dan Craven of the Rapha Condor Sharp team saw the incident on a descent after a climb in Co Leitrim.
"Six guys went down, and I was in seventh position. I was the first guy who didn't fall," he said. "Some riders went over the top of the jeep."
The race resumes in Oughterard in Galway today.
Sadly, former international cyclist David Houragan, a regular of the Rás, was found dead by his girlfriend in Thailand. David graced the Irish scene in the late 80s and 90s. In 1992 he won the International Manx Grand Prix.
