Quill goal sets Wesley up for Alex showdown

Wesley College will attempt to dethrone Alexandra College next Tuesday after setting up a Leinster Senior Cup date at Grange Road this week.

The Ballinteer school snatched the winner 18 minutes from time when Sara Quill latched onto the end of Niamh Sweeney's pull-back to get the better of near neighbours Loreto, Beaufort 1-0.

Alexandra College -- champions in 2011 -- had a more comfortable passage in a wide-open game in the second semi-final as they beat High School 6-1. The Rathgar school had held most of the early possession but the speed of youth internationals Hannah McDermott, Anna Roopnarinesingh and Emily Beatty (pictured) on the break hurt them on the break.

McDermott broke the deadlock as Millie O'Donnell intercepted and fired forward for Beatty to lay on the first chance in the second minute. The striker nabbed her second six minutes later before Louise McPhillips made it 3-0 at half-time. Further goals from Erika Hinkson, O'Donnell and Alison Gibbons were only interrupted by a close-range effort.

The final will take place on March 6 in Grange Road with the game tipping off at 2.30pm. Wesley and Alex have already met in the league, playing out a thrilling game which Alex won late in the day.

Leinster Schoolgirl Senior Cup semi-finals (both at Grange Road): Loreto Beaufort 0 Wesley 1 (S Quill); Alexandra College 6 (H McDermott 2, L McPhillips, M O'Donnell, E Hinkson, A Gibbons) High School 1 (S O'Donoghue).
