O'Gara girls get in on a gold rush

SISTERS Zoe and Sarah O'Gara powered their way, with imposing performances, to two gold medals apiece and be crowned Irish double Judo champions at last weekend's Irish Open championship held at Dublin's Citywest Hotel.

The Coolmine Community School students, both previous winners of the Herald School Sports Star of the Week accolade, dominated in the Cadet and Junior categories winning four out of four contests in the Cadet and two out of two in the Junior section.

"I'm delighted to have won it; it's the first time to ever win it. The competition was tough enough but I'm just delighted to come through it," said a quietly spoken Zoe O'Gara while Sarah said it felt "good" to be a double Irish Open champion.

The sisters' success comes on the back of a year where the fifth year and sixth year students have intensified their training routine, doing five to six days a week between Coolmine Judo Club and Swords Judo Club and one day in the gym.

Such dedication and commitment to the sport paid off earlier dividends when Zoe and Sarah recently returned home, each with a bronze medal, from the Heart of England Tournament in Wolverhampton at the end of August.
