Officials back Ryder timing

GOLF: Ryder Cup 2014 organisers have defended the decision keep the tournament in its traditional autumn date, despite concerns about another weather-disrupted event.

The 2014 biennial match between Europe and the United States will take place from September 26-28 at Gleneagles, Scotland, organisers confirmed.

European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills said: "We're very confident of delivery in this particular date. (Changing the date) was looked at but we were very comfortable with what was in the mix."

McIlroy in with shout of Donald

Rory McIlroy may not have to win the last two events of the European Tour to catch Luke Donald in the money list.

Second place in this week's Hong Kong Open followed by victory in next week's Dubai World Championship could be good enough. Because the Order of Merit is based on euros, it will depend on the exchange rate with the US dollar next week.
