O'Connor upholding Olympic ideal

Before the Irish Olympic team departed for Vancouver, one of the athletes was lending his support to fundraising efforts in Haiti.

Slalom skier Shane O'Connor was cycling on a stationary bike in LA Fitness in Dartry, Dublin, in an attempt to reach 6,796km, the distance from Dublin to the devastated capital Port-au-Prince.

The skier and his trainer, Colin Gaffney, are hoping to help the gym raise €2,000 for The Irish Red Cross Haiti Fund. Over $1,500 has been raised so far.

Shane, who has been skiing since he was five years old, said that there was a sense of disbelief that he had qualified for the Games in a technically difficult discipline.

"For a long time I've refused to look past qualifying or my next scheduled races," he said. "I've never really accepted the Olympics as an actual reality."
