O'Caoimh takes it to the next level in wake of junior fourth Permanent course at Donadea online Challenger moved to Valentine's Day

WAKEBOARDING: Looking forward to the spring is 15-year-old Dublin wakeboarder David O'Caoimh, who finished fourth in the junior competition at the World Wakeboard Championships in Korea last season.

O'Caoimh has been wakeboarding for five years and his winter training spot is the icy waters of Lough Sillan in Cavan.

A transition-year student, this year O'Caoimh plans to spend the winter training in South Africa and Florida, with home-schooling tutors to ensure that he keeps up with his schoolwork.

3Wakeboarding is a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing. Wakeboarders 'ride' the 'wake' of the towboat at speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour.

Perry and Kenny lead Irish in rankings

SQUASH: Irish No1 squash player Madeline Perry begins the new year still ranked No8 in the world in the most recent list.

Aisling Blake has risen one place to No27.

Kerri Lancaster is at No128 while the injured Laura Mylotte has dropped to 252. Liam Kenny, forced to pull out of the Irish Nationals last month, is up two places to 61 on the men's list followed by Irish champion John Rooney, down to 84, and Arthur Gaskin, up a place at 90.

Permanent course at Donadea online

ORIENTEERING: Although January is never the best month for orienteering, those seeking their weekend fix have a new Coillte-sponsored permanent course to run or walk around at Donadea Forest Park in Co Kildare.

To try out these courses, simply download a map on a colour printer and off you go. Short, medium and long options are usually available. Hellfire Woods is another permanent course already functioning, with Carrickgolligan and Ticknock on the way, felling permitting. See www.coillteoutdoors.ie.

TABLE TENNIS: New date for the second STIGA Junior Challenger tournament, originally scheduled for last Sunday in Dunshaughlin, is Sunday February 14 at the same venue. Next major tournament is the Munster Open in Ballincollig on the weekend of January 23.
