Cork boxing promoter Gary Hyde has announced what promises to be a cracking 10-bout bill for Saturday, February 15, at the National Stadium.
"The last big show we put on was Guillermo Rigondeaux and Willie Casey at City West in 2011," says Gary. "But I'm convinced there's an appetite for big events because of the number of requests I've been getting from the fans."
With a wealth of world-class boxers in his stable, Hyde believes that the show next month will provide a perfect showcase for his fighters and exciting new Irish talent. "We've just added Ryan Burnett," he says. "And Luke Keeler as well."
On the bill will be Hyde's French-based cruiserweight, from the Congo, Youri Kayembre Kalenga (18-1, 12 KOs) and WBO middleweight challenger Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (28-1, 17 KOs), who recently beat Anthony Fitzgerald in Spain.
"We've put on over 80 fights now," says Gary. "And we know the calibre of opposition required. We won't have journeymen who'll fall over. We'll have tough, stiff opposition who'll make these exciting fights. That's what the fight fans want."
While negotiations are still in play on a possible TV partner, Hyde is happy to credit the Boxing Union of Ireland for their encouragement. "BUI boss Mel Christle and his team have been hugely supportive of this venture at the home of Irish boxing," he says.
