Elizabeth Morland of Dunshaughlin Community College proved the star of the Aviva Leinster Schools Indoor Combined Events Championships in Athlone when she won the inter girls' competition with a stunning score of 3,702.
This was by some way an Irish schools record and may even be an international best.
Morland earned a massive 927 points for her time of 8.92 seconds in the hurdles, and also scored well in the high jump where she soared over 1.68m for 830 points. She proved the class of the field in the long jump picking up 712 points for a jump of 5.54 – almost a metre ahead of anyone else.
The shot was her weakest event in terms of points, but her 9.45m effort still saw her comfortably heading the table. In the 800m, she was the fastest of the day with a time of 2 mins 36 secs for 739 points.
Also over 3,000 points was Annabelle Morris of St Vincent's, who proved particularly strong in the hurdles and 800m.
Best score in the boys' competition came from Mark Rogers of St Joseph's Drogheda, with 3,171 points. In the shot, Rogers' throw of 13.03 was worth 669 points and he was also over 600 points in the hurdles, 200m and 800m and only slightly below 600 in the long jump. Second on 2,951 was Ciarán Joyce of St Mary's who was over 600 in both hurdles and 200m, where his time of 24.10 was the fastest of the day.
Our Lady's Greenhills' Amy McTeggert, last year's inter champion, continued her winning streak when she comfortably won the senior girls' title.
In the inter boys, Matt Behan of CUS won with 3,116 points. He ran 23.80 seconds in the 200m, 8.49 seconds in the hurdles, and was also strong in the long jump.
