Monty set for Cup headache Leamy back in training camp

GOLF: Colin Montgomerie now has four players in the world's top 20 who are not in his Ryder Cup side -- and he has only three wild cards to hand out in just over a month.

Italian Edoardo Molinari followed up his Scottish Open victory three weeks ago with a third-place finish at the Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm yesterday.

That result took the former US Amateur winner into the game's top 20 for the first time but, like Pádraig Harrington, Paul Casey and Justin Rose, he still has to make it into one of the nine automatic qualifying positions for October's match at Celtic Manor.

Unlike many of his rivals for a place, the 29-year-old from Turin is missing this week's Irish Open in Killarney to prepare for next week's world championship in Akron and then the USPGA in Wisconsin, America.

Swede Richard S Johnson won his home country's only European Tour event by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the final green after it looked as if he would go into a play-off with Argentina's Rafa Echenique.

Damien McGrane finished best of the Irish competitors, tied for eighth on six-under, while Michael Hoey finished three shots further back in a tie for 13th place.

Meanwhile, Bernhard Langer claimed the British Senior Open at Carnoustie, Scotland, carding a 72 to win by a stroke with a five-under-par tally.

Leamy back in training camp

rugby: Ireland will host a training camp for the players who were unavailable to tour Australia and New Zealand.

Head coach Declan Kidney has called for the meet-up at the Johnstown House Hotel in Enfield, Co Meath, to keep his injured troops up to speed ahead of the autumn series in November. Denis Leamy -- who is set to return after a seven-month lay-off with a knee injury -- will be joined by the likes of Paul O'Connell, Stephen Ferris and Luke Fitzgerald as Ireland aim to get back on track following summer defeats to New Zealand, the NZ Maoris and Australia.

DARTS: Phil Taylor beat Raymond van Barneveld 18-12 to win his 11th World Matchplay title in Blackpool, England, last night.
