McGrane five shots off pace

GOLF: Irishman Damien McGrane, who shot a |five-under-par 67 yesterday, started on the back nine today at the Volvo China Open in Tianjin and recorded a second round of 71 to leave him five shots behind the joint leaders, Englishman Gary Boyd and Jean-Baptitste Gonnet of France.

The Kells man fell foul of the par-three |16th and par-five 18th. The 41-year-old had back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes.

On the front nine, he bagged another couple of birdies, on the fifth and eighth holes, but also hit a bogey on the fourth hole.

McGrane recorded his only European Tour victory at the Volvo China Open back in 2008.

Defending champion Nicolas Colsaerts, 29, found his form on the second day, as a round of five-under par 67 left him two shots off the pace.

The Belgian had an eagle on the 575-yard |second for the second day running, following it up with five birdies and two bogeys to better by one shot his opening round of 68. That put him on nine under for the tournament.

Overnight leader Matthew Baldwin faltered in his second round, with back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes – as he started on the back nine – seeing him surrender the initiative. He signed for a round of one over par to leave him on the same mark as McGrane.
