McDowell off to super start

golf: Graeme McDowell made an excellent start to the Maybank Malaysian Open to share the lead with defending champion Lee Westwood.

McDowell carded a six under par 66 with a bogey on the sixth hole the only stain on an otherwise impressive opening round.

Defending champion Westwood also dropped a shot on the sixth, but four birdies in his final seven holes propelled the world number 30 to joint top of the leaderboard.

Ryder Cup winning captain, Paul McGinley, also enjoyed a good round as three birdies in his opening three holes helped the Dubliner to a three under par 69 and a share of seventh place, while Peter Lawrie recorded a one under par round 71.

WALKER Cup star Gavin Moynihan thrust himself into contention through 36 holes of the South African Amateur Open Stroke Play at Port Elizabeth.

A sturdy second round of one-under 71 lifted The Island golfer into a share of sixth on five-under, four off the lead shared by extravagantly-named South Africans Rupert Kaminsky and Luke Trocado with two rounds remaining. Moynihan, 20, was runner-up in the EP Border Championship on the same course last Sunday.

Silva tests positive

mixed martial arts: Anderson Silva has failed an out-of-competition drugs test for steroids.

The former middleweight champion, who many consider the best ever MMA fighter, tested positive for drostanolone metabolites on 9 January.

Nick Diaz, who Anderson defeated in his return with a unanimous-decision victory at Saturday's UFC 183, has tested positive for marijuana.
