CYCLING: Tony Martin retained the rainbow jersey of world time trial champion when he recorded a time of 58 minutes and 38 seconds for the 45.7km race against the clock in Valkenburg yesterday.
While he managed to catch and pass Vuelta winner Alberto Contador, who had started two minutes ahead of him, Martin was under threat for most of the race from American Taylor Phinney, who finished fourth in the Olympic time trial in August.
"I'm totally happy," said the German. "I knew it would be tight to Taylor Phinney.
"There were only 10 seconds between us most of the time and the last kilometre was one of my longest ever. It was really hard but I am so happy."
Michael Hutchinson was the only Irish rider, finishing 46th.
Judd comeback trumps Hawkins

Four-time world champion John Higgins came from behind to seal a comfortable 5-2 win over Jamie Jones.
Chavez Jr facing marijuana probe
BOXING: Middleweight fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr could be stripped of his $3million purse, depending on the explanation he offers for a positive test for marijuana after his first professional loss in Las Vegas.
Top Rank Inc spokesman Lee Samuels said promoter Bob Arum was aware the 26-year-old tested positive.
"Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will have the opportunity to explain the situation to the Nevada State Athletic Commission," Samuels said in a statement.
Commission executive Keith Kizer said the commission can ban a fighter for one year and penalise him for up to 100pc of his purse for a failed test.
