Martin pipped at post

CYCLING: Ireland's Dan Martin came agonisingly close to tasting victory in yesterday's stage of the Vuelta a Espana but was edged out on the line by Michael Matthews.

Australian Matthews snatched the overall leader's red jersey when he perfectly timed his effort to win the third stage.

Orica-GreenEdge rider Matthews accelerated with about 200 metres left to beat Martin, who moves up to 24th overall, to the line after being one of few sprint specialists to sustain the pace in a short climb near the end of a 197.8-km ride from Cadiz.

Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez took third place.

Bronze for Gallager at Youths Olympics

BOXING: Michael Gallagher will be bringing home bronze from the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

The Donegal heavyweight beat Korea's Kim Jin-Nyong in yesterday's 91kg bronze medal box-off on a unanimous decision.

But Cork middleweight Christian Desmond had to settle for a
fourth-place finish after losing in the middleweight bronze medal box-off on a unanimous decision to Australia's Caitlin Parker.
