A FAULTLESS run saw Maciek Piotrowksi of St Killian's Bray clocking the fastest time for the 5th/6th year boys' 4.8km course at the Leinster Schools Orienteering League event held in misty Marlay Park, Dublin.
Piotrowksi's time of 24 minutes 3 seconds gave him over a minute to spare on second-placed Chris Pollard of Rockbrook, with Joseph Manly, also Rockbrook, two minutes behind for third place.
In the girls' competition, a couple of newcomers trying the sport for the very first time put in exceptional runs.
Laura Fallon of St Peter's Dunboyne was a clear winner of the transition year 3.8km, while in the 2/3rd year 2.5km, Ailbhe Healy of Castleknock Community College sped around the course in just 16:33.
Best of the 1st year girls was Mairead Griffin of Castleknock, who finished five minutes ahead of her rivals.
Castleknock Community College were the school to beat in all age groups and winning the 2nd/3rd year boys' 3.8km in 17:37 was Luke Kearney, who has been a regular winner in this age group for the past year. In second place was Rockbrook's Ruairi Long who is new to this age group.
Robbie Doyle, another member of the strong Castleknock squad, was the winner of the 1st year boys' competition.
The transition year boys' 4.6km proved close enough with Sean Kearns of Dunshaughlin CC chased hard by Kevin McCabe of Rockbrook with only a minute between them.
