Losses limited by Bialoblocki

CYCLING: Polish An Post Rás leader Marcin Bialoblocki's yellow jersey came under threat three times yesterday.

A problem with a tyre necessitated an early bike change, which was followed by an attack by a 23-strong break-away group that included Irish riders Sam Bennett of An Post, Connor McConvey (Synergy Baku), Chris Reilly (Meath M Donnelly), Conor Murphy (Dublin Eurocycles), Roger Aiken (Louth Prague Charter) and former race leader Conor Dunne (Tipperary Carrick Iverk Produce).

When this group got a gap of almost three minutes a few kilometres later, Bialoblocki didn't bat an eyelid.

On the climb of Ladies View after 80km, however, things changed dramatically after a strong reaction from the peloton closed the gap. Although stage winner Russia's Kirill Pozdnyakov, Canadian Remi Pelletier and British pro Richard Handley (Rapha Condor) escaped and managed to contest the stage win in Glengarriff, Bialoblocki limited his losses to just 28 seconds.

Rosberg fastest

F1: Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg posted the fastest time in the first practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix today.

The German has been on pole position for the last two races and clocked 1 minute, 16.195 seconds to finish 0.087 faster than Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Romain Grosjean was third fastest for Lotus. Lewis Hamilton was fifth behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa, with Championship leader Sebastian Vettel back in 10th.

Visconti dazzles

CYCLING: Giovanni Visconti yesterday claimed his second Giro d'Italia stage win in four days as the Movistar rider produced a stunning solo ride to blow away his rivals.
