loose tyre kills dragster fan

TRAGEDY struck dragster racing at Firebird International Raceway in the United States at the weekend.

A female spectator died on Sunday evening after being hit by a tyre that broke loose from a Top Fuel dragster, causing a wreck during a first-round race in the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Chandler.

The dragster, driven by Antron Brown, lost its left rear tyre, sending it out of control and into the left lane of opponent Troy Buff before hitting the wall.

Brown's dragster turned on its right side and briefly burst into flames as the loose tyre bounced into the crowd and struck the unidentified woman.

The woman was flown by helicopter to hospital in Phoenix but was pronounced dead several hours later.

Brown's dragster was brought back to his pits and immediately covered with a black tarpaulin.
