Lohan marches on in Denmark Taylor to Czech in India remove Smith

TENNIS: Sinead Lohan, 15, ended the hopes of Sweden's Viktoria Matejevic on a 6-3 6-4 scoreline, in the first round of qualifying in the girls' singles in the ITF U18 event in Copenhagen.

Today, Lohan, who won the National Indoors U18 title after Christmas, takes on Greece's No4 seed Tina Papaoikonomou.

Meanwhile, unheralded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy ripped up the form book with a 7-6 6-3 upset of second-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the first round of the Memphis Championships yesterday.



O'Loughlin returns

CYCLING: David O'Loughlin of the An Post/Sean Kelly Team makes a welcome return to action on the roads of Portugal today in the Tour of the Algarve.

The Cong cyclist was involved in a horrific accident at the end of July 2009 in Germany which sidelined him for the the season.



Taylor to Czech in

BOXING: World and European lightweight champ Katie Taylor will take part in the Usti Nad Labem Multi-Nations in the Czech Republic next month.

The Bray woman has been named in a two-member squad along with Drimnagh BC middleweight Sinead Kavanagh for the March 9 tournament.

Also, defending flyweight champion Declan Geraghty has pulled out of the Elite National Senior Championships injured.



India remove Smith

CRICKET: India removed South Africa skipper Graeme Smith for 20 as the hosts edged a step closer to a series-tying victory on the fourth day of the second and final test today.

South Africa hold a 1-0 lead in a bid to win their first series on Indian soil for a decade.
