Lewis revels in winning at Singapore

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton moved to the top of the Formula One standings with victory in Singapore, yet the Briton was more relieved than delighted after his team-mate suffered mechanical issues and the safety car was deployed midway through the race.

Hamilton had arrived in Southeast Asia 22 points behind fellow Mercedes drive Nico Rosberg but after squeaking pole position in qualifying, Hamilton made the most of the German's misfortune to forge a three-point lead by the end of the day.

"Obviously in qualifying it was close between everyone so I didn't really know what to expect today but I got off cleanly," Hamilton, who recorded his seventh victory of the season, told reporters after beating the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo to the line.

"It would have been a far more hardcore race had Nico been with me as the car was feeling very good and we would have been strong.

"Later on in the race, I was a little bit unaware of what I needed to do."

Groves victorious

Boxing: George Groves made a winning return to action in his first fight since losing to Carl Froch in May by outpointing Frenchman Christopher Rebrasse at Wembley Arena.

The unanimous verdict saw Groves claim Rebrasse's European super middleweight crown and the vacant WBC silver title.

Groves said of his win: "It feels great. It was a tough fight. I didn't want to run out of steam, I felt in great condition but you always have to be cautious against a guy who has never been stopped.

"I want to knock people out, I didn't manage it tonight but I gave it a real good go."

Ivanovic on top

Tennis: Former world number one Ana Ivanovic brushed aside Caroline Wozniacki to win the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and move closer to sealing a berth for the season-ending WTA finals in Singapore.

The 6-2 7-6 (2) win in the $1 million tournament also gave the Serb her fourth WTA title of the year.

"Caroline played a great match today," Ivanovic said after her win. "It was a really good battle out there but I just tried to take it one point at a time, and I'm really happy to make it through."
