Lavery in mood to put brakes on Brammeier's National run

These are great days for Cuchulainn CC and Pat O'Shaughnessy, organiser of the Irish National Elite Road Race Championships in Carlingford, County Louth.

Tomorrow's championships offer an opportunity for supporters of cycling to drop in and see the best of competition.

Carlingford village will be the hub for all the action, with the Lough and Cooley mountains providing a magnificent backdrop for the day's drama.

The biggest single day race in the country offers Union Cycliste Internationale world ranking points, and Champion System's Matt Brammeier is sure to have a big say again this year, having won the past three championships.

But Philip Deignan, Aaron Buggle, Peter Hawkins, Felix English, Ryan Mullen and Conor Dunne will all be in the mix.

However, there's no question about this year's winner for me.

Philip Lavery, who is based in France, where he rides for AC Bisontine, ticks all the boxes.

AquaBlue have the firepower to claim team honours, but I'm sure Eurocycles will not be out in force purely to make up the numbers.
