LARKIN Community College and Coláiste Dhúlaigh contested the minor, junior and intermediate finals with Dhúlaigh denying Larkin the treble by dethroning the junior holders at last week's CDVEC SCC schools badminton finals in Coláiste Dhúlaigh, Coolock.
Both schools put in impressive showings with the hosts' Karl Gibbons (junior) and Larkin's Gerard Black (minor) and Shauna Mitchell (intermediate) the stand-out performers of the day.
The minor final, with both teams all square at 2-2, went down to the deciding game with Black and Naomi Russell facing Dhúlaigh's Luigi Dekhos and Zoe Flynn in the mixed doubles.
Dhúlaigh took the first set 11-8 before Larkin bounced back in the second (11-5) and final set (11-4) to win the title. Earlier in the day Black and Dhúlaigh's Dylan McGuigan played some super badminton in their singles match with Black coming out on top 11-5, 11-13, 13-11.
Larkin's intermediate captain Shane Hamiliton and Shauna Mitchell put in excellent displays in their singles games; while Merabi Bendeliani and Eddie Sirbu's 11-4, 11-7 win in the boys doubles saw Larkin lift the Perpetual Shield.
In the junior contest, Dhúlaigh, led by Karl Gibbons, were unstoppable in their pursuit of silverware.
Gibbons overpowered Ryan Fay 11-5, 11-7 in the boys' singles. Emma Mullen doubled the host's lead with a comprehensive 11-4, 11-2 win against Aisling Brady.
Further wins in the boys' doubles, by Gibbons/Eric Casey, by the girls' doubles pair of Brady/Lauren Deegan and by Brady/Cody Kenny in the mixed doubles made it a clean sweep of wins for Dhúlaigh.
