Kylemore hit heights to claim boys' crown

Kylemore College's boys' team led by Michael Maher stepped up to the mark to claim the VEC Bouldering Intermediate Schools' title held in Coláiste Eoin's sports hall in Finglas.

Marino finished second while the holders Larkin Community College had to settle for third place. However, Nicole Dunne and Eva Knowd retained the Girls' Intermediate title for the north inner city school.

Students had to get to grips with 13 challenging individual climbs before wrestling with the speed climb race-off, a steep, overhanging wall with two identical climbs pitting the competitors against each other in a test of speed and skill.

In the boys' individual climbing event, Larkin's Florin Cracut and Kylemore's Michael Maher couldn't be separated again as they recorded top marks across the testing climbs to safeguard their joint title for another year.

Marino's Sean Kavanagh took silver with Maher's colleague Robbie Quinn taking bronze for the Ballyfermot College.

The boys' speed climb saw Cracut and Maher come face to face in the final, with Maher, the defending champion, getting off to the perfect start, leaving Cracut lagging behind.

At the midway point, Cracut gave himself a glimmer of hope by clawing his way back into touching distance of his opponent.

Going into the final stretch Maher still held a slight advantage but Cracut refused to give up and pulled off a fantastic last-grasp move to pip the Kylemore student right at the death.

"I thought I was going to lose but at the last second I just jumped up and grabbed the chain. It feels good (to win the double) for the last year of school and to give something back to the college," said Larkin's jubilant sixth year student.

Kavanagh came in third in the speed climb to add another medal to Marino's tally.

The girls' individual event was a one-two finish for Larkin -- Dunne claiming gold and Knowd silver -- closely followed by Bonnybrook's Ciara Byrne in third place.

Crumlin College's senior team stepped into the climbing arena for the first time with the students competing for individual honours. Darren Byrne topped the scoring charts ahead of Sean Cormack, with David Keogh finishing third.
