Italian job for Killester's Ince and Irish Taekwon Do team

Current world champions Ellen Ince, Dylan Murphy and Dylan Fitzgibbon lead a 39-strong Irish team at the World ITF Taekwon Do championships in Jesolo, Italy starting next Tuesday and continuing until May 31.

Ince, aged 17 and a member of Killester Taekwon-do club, won double gold in the 2013 World Championships in Benidorm and was named best junior female competitor. Murphy, also aged 17, won the -56kg sparring division two years ago and moves up to -62kg for this tournament.

Of particular Irish interest is the 70kg senior category where Fitzgibbon, the defending champion from Turner's Cross in Cork could face Killester's Adam Shelley, who beat him for the European title.

Others with individual medal chances include Stephen Smullen (above), Richie Forde, Sarah Lehane and Katy Laffan, while the Irish also aim to put up a strong team showing. At the 2013 worlds, Ireland finished second on the medals table with 10 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze medals.
