In brief: Mortimer wins with 40ft putt Cronin seals title

GOLF: Galwayman David Mortimer holed out in spectacular fashion from just off the final green at Seapoint to complete a stunning one-stroke win over European Tour player Damien McGrane as the PGA Irish Championship came to an astonishing climax.

Both men deserve credit for fashioning a rip-roaring finish worthy of the 100th edition of this championship. Moments before Mortimer applied the coup de grace from 40ft, McGrane had an eagle chance, but he hit the rim and could only register a birdie.

Rocket's revamp

SNOOKER: The success of the World Open should act as the catalyst for a scaled-down World Championship, according to winner Neil Robertson and beaten finalist Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Robertson celebrated his new status as world number one by beating O'Sullivan 5-1 in the final, and O'Sullivan said of the Crucible event: "It's a long time being in Sheffield -- 17 days. That's longer than the Olympics."
