howth run to burn off food

With a record number of races taking place on all corners of this island, burning off the Christmas excesses should be absolutely no problem over the next week or so.

Today, the big race in Leinster is the Robbie Byrne Memorial 5km in Navan, while tomorrow, Suttonians Rugby Club organise the Fat Turkey 10km around the Hill of Howth - a surefire way of burning off the Christmas excesses.

Parkrun Ireland continues to thrive with a record 2,700 running in one weekend last month. The Parkrun phenomenon can take huge credit for the increasing numbers joining clubs - at the end of 2014, that figure now stands at an all-time high of 54,000. New for Parkun in 2015 are runs in counties Kerry, Sligo and Wexford as well well as more runs in the more established urban areas.

First indoor competition of the year is the Munster Junior and U23 Indoors in Nenagh on January 4, with guests welcome. That's followed by the opening round of the National Indoor League in Athlone on Sunday January 11; entries for that close next Monday December 29. Details on the Athletics Ireland website.

Dara Rennicks of Bohermeen and Dunboyne's Emilia Dan were the winners of the Meath Senior Cross-Country championships held at Moyvalley Golf and Country Club. In the men's race, Rennicks beat current Irish schools champion Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea, with Luke Forde of Dunboyne third and Dunboyne taking team gold. Dan beat Shauna Moran of Dunshaughlin and Navan's Ciara Rooney for the women's title, with Dunshaughlin the winning team.
