CYCLING: A daring break paid off for Christopher Horner as the RadioShack-Leopard rider claimed victory on stage three of the Vuelta a Espana between Vigo and Mirador de Lobeira yesterday.
The American pulled away from the peleton with less than a kilometre to go on the 172.5km course.
Vuelta favourites Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) tried to close Horner down but were unable to catch him.
The stage win sees Horner take the lead in the general classification with an eight-second advantage over Vincenzo Nibali.
Ireland's Nicolas Roche, riding for Team Saxo-Tinkoff, lies third after adding a ninth-placed finish to his stage win on Sunday while Dan Martin (Garmin Sharp) finished fifth to lie 33rd overall.
RYDER CUP FIGHT BEGINS IN WALES
GOLF: The year-long quest to win a place in Europe's 2014 Ryder Cup team starts at this week's Wales Open and captain Paul McGinley cannot wait for the qualifying process to begin.
"This is another significant milestone in my captaincy and it is going to be an exciting campaign to see who can make the team for Gleneagles next year," McGinley said.
Italy's Francesco Molinari is the only member of the triumphant side that won so dramatically in Illinois last September who will tee up at Celtic Manor in Thursday's opening round.
Celtic Manor was also the venue for Europe's Ryder Cup victory over the US in 2010.
Among the other title hopefuls competing at the Wales Open are former British Open champion Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Alvaro Quiros, Ross Fisher, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Thomas Bjorn.
