Dyson pushes for Celtic Manor spot

GOLF: Europe's Ryder Cup race might yet come down to the final hole at Gleneagles tomorrow.

For Simon Dyson to knock Miguel Angel Jimenez out of the side, he has to win the Johnnie Walker Championship and the 46-year-old Spaniard has to be outside the top nine.

They resumed today in joint seventh place, only three shots behind leaders David Lynn, Gary Boyd and Julien Guerrier.

Even if Jimenez does what he has to do, Dyson would still get in if he wins and Peter Hanson is outside the top 43.

That looked unlikely as the third round began with the Swede also on six under par.

Amazingly, Italian brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari were alongside Dyson, Jimenez and Hanson when they teed off again. Francesco is able to relax after Ross McGowan's withdrawal through injury on Thursday guaranteed him a debut at Celtic Manor in October.

Alonso targets Spa win

F1: Fernando Alonso is confident of retaining the momentum that has thrust him into contention for a third Formula One world title.

The 29-year-old Spaniard heads into Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix 20 points adrift of the championship leader, Red Bull's Mark Webber.

And after finishing top of the timesheets in both practice sessions predominantly run in the wet, he fancies his chances of a first win at Spa.

"We have improved the car over the past three grands prix and now we have a very competitive package, so we know we will be tough competition," said Alonso.

Munster solid in victory

RUGBY: Munster's Magners League preparations continued apace with a convincing 15-10 win over Gloucester in a friendly at Musgrave Park. Alan Quinlan and Wian du Preez scored the tries and Paul Warwick added a conversion and penalty against a full-strength Gloucester side.
