Doherty proves Kentstown hero

Kentstown rise to challenge

Kentstown Rovers 1

Kingscourt Harps 0

From an initial entry of 60 teams involving the Saturday reserve sections and division four Sunday teams, the final of the very competitive Reilly Cup at the MGL Grounds was an all A Reserve affair involving the winners Kingscourt Harps, and third-placed Kentstown Rovers.

The Kingscourt players for the most part look very tired after a very hectic few weeks in which they contested the Reserve Cup Final following their league success.

As a result Kentstown took the early initiative, as they appeared more eager and up for the task. Former Carrick Rovers 'keeper David Watters was called into action as early as the sixth minute when his superb reactions proved enough to keep out a well-directed Robbie Burke shot.

Kingscourt could have taken the lead close to the break when Stephen Kierans' shot went narrowly wide with the goal at his mercy.

The third quarter saw no chances of note with both sides happy enough to keep it firmly tight at the back.

The introduction of substitute Damien Doherty by Kentstown on the 70th minute had an almost instant impact as only three minutes later he raced in behind the Kingscourt rearguard to put his side one up.

Kingscourt battled hard for the remaining 17 minutes but could not get an equalizer, as Kentstown took the honours in this competition for the first time in the club's history.
