Crystal cracked as O'Toole heads home

Emmett O'Toole struck the winning goal for St. Joseph's with a late header and that was good enough to put his side into the final of the O'Neill's Sheridan First Division Cup after they defeated Waterford Crystal in what was an entertaining semi-final clash at Ozier Park.

Shane Rochford forced St Joseph's goalkeeper Ruairi Sheridan into a fine save in the first minute before Crystal were dealt a massive blow three minutes later when Liam Coady was forced off injured after picking up a shoulder injury, Shane Rochford sent the resulting free kick wide.

It was St Joseph's that went in front with their first attack on fifteen minutes when a clearance from Billy Ryan sent Adam Deegan clear down the left and after cutting into the penalty area, he beat Crystal keeper Aidan Maher with an angled right-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area.Crystal were back on level terms eight minutes later when Tomas Stephenson set up Daniel Murphy down the left and his cross found the inrushing Johnny Gleeson, who gave the Saints keeper Ruairi Sheridan little chance with a fine finish from close range.

Rochford was back in the action again minutes laster as he brought a fine save out of the Saints keeper Sheridan who saved his attempt at the second time of asking.

Then Crystal striker Daniel Murphy had a chance in the final minute of the half when he got on the end of a through ball from Keith Kennedy but fired wide with a powerful right foot shot from the edge of the box.

A last ditch tackle from Waterford Crystal defender Adam Forsey deep into the first half of added time denied the Saints the lead. Emmett O'Toole got free to the left of the area but a goal saving tackle from Forsey deflected the ball out for a corner kick in what proved to be the last action of the half.

St Joseph's created the first chance of the second half on 54 minutes when some good work out on the right from David Flynn set up Eoin Swift but his well struck right-footed shot flashed inches Aidan Maher's crossbar, Maher showed his class to make a brilliant close range save from Emmett O'Toole on sixty nine minutes as the Saints began to get on top.

O'Toole struck for the lead goal for St Josephs on eighty minutes when a brilliant cross from the right from Paul Hammond saw the striker peel away from his marker before planting an unstoppable header past Crystal keeper Aidan Maher from six yards giving the keeper no chance whatsoever.

Crystal twice went close in injury time to forcing a penalty shootout when Johnny Gleeson dragged a right-footed effort inches wide after getting on the end of an Oliver Murphy cross before Daniel Murphy had the final chance of injury time but his cracking effort flew inches wide of the left hand post.
