Crangle close in Donnelly Cup

DUBLIN will have to wait a little longer to welcome the Donnelly Cup. It hasn't been in the capital since 1991.

Loughlinstown's John Crangle came close. He finished three shots behind Claycastle's Anthony O'Loughlin in the National Gents Senior Championship Strokeplay final at Douglas.

"The big question everybody was asking beforehand was could Cork regain the blue riband of pitch and putt," remarked National PRO, Padraig O'Shea.

"Most commentators tipped a Cork winner. And after earlier winning the Junior and Inter Strokeplay titles, who could stop the Cork juggernaut?

"Eventually it came down to a two-way tussle. Few would have bet against Crangle on the last 18, but O'Loughlin shot a stupendous 42."

So a hat-trick for the Leeside Lions. Maybe 2012 could be the year of the Dubs.
