Cole blames 'paps' for making Lamborghini break speed limit

EVERYONE'S favourite footballer Ashley Cole claimed he was trying to evade the paparazzi when he was caught speeding at more than 100mph in a £150,000 sports car.

The Chelsea player, who earns £120,000 a week, did not attend his trial for speeding at Kingston Magistrates Court, London and was convicted in his absence.

The England defender was recorded by a police speed gun driving his black Lamborghini at 104mph in a 50mph zone on the A3 in Kingston, southwest London.

When the 29-year-old footballer was pulled over by a police officer moments later, Cole said: "Can't you do anything about these idiots that keep chasing me?"

His sentencing was adjourned until later this month, but the magistrates indicated that he faces a driving ban.

Police Constable John Wills was carrying out speed checks on the area that day when he noticed Cole's car.

He told the court, "it seemed to be travelling considerably faster" than any other vehicle.

Wills and a colleague flagged him down after recording his speed. Cole pulled over in a nearby bus stop. "I asked him if he knew what the speed limit was on that stretch of road, and he replied '50'," Wills said.

"Then I asked him what speed he was doing, and he said 80mph. I pointed out he was doing considerably more than that and showed him the laser device."

The officer said that after being cautioned, Cole complained about photographers. Wills said: "He pointed out that there was a man with a camera some distance further down the road."

Cole is expected to attend his sentencing hearing in person on January 29.
