The WBO title fight between Jamie Conlan and Junior Granados on Saturday rates as the most thrilling sporting event in Dublin in years.
Caught by a crippling bodyshot in the seventh round, Conlan struggled to his feet to beat the count. Granados then unleashed an explosive repertoire of vicious hooks, uppercuts and body shots to finish the wounded Conlan.
But raw courage and the roar of a packed Stadium kept Conlan going. Down again under the onslaught, Conlan beat the count and astonished the Mexican by taking the fight to him in the eight.
He went on to win by unanimous decision. It was an epic contest.
"You never want to be in a fight like that," said MGM boss Matthew Macklin later. "But for building his career and winning fans, that was great."
Champ Conlan was sanguine. "My head was clear," he explained.
"It was just the body shot. When he was throwing those punches I was trying to ride the storm, catch my wind and strike back. I knew that was his best. I knew I could beat him."
Multiple-bogey score on Donald Trump's card
Following Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants ("They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people"), ESPN has moved next week's ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic from Trump National Golf Club saying, "Diversity and inclusion are core values at ESPN and our decision also supports that commitment.
"We decided it was appropriate to change the venue."
Trump (below), whose popularity is rising in Republican polls, complains the media "deliberately distorted" his statement.
Last week, citing "remarks that do not reflect our club's values of respect and diversity", LA Galaxy revealed it was looking for a new venue for the charity golf tournament it had planned for October at Trump National.
In a joint statement the LPGA, PGA of America and USGA said, "Mr. Trump's comments are inconsistent with our strong commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment in golf."
No home advantage for Longford against Kildare
Unfortunately, the structural subsidence that was discovered in the stands at Longford county ground Glennon Bros Pearse Park earlier this year is now in danger of affecting the senior team's progress.
In April, citing an engineer's report which confirmed health and safety issues, the County Board Chairman explained, "There's a job of work to be done." Concern was expressed that, if remedial work wasn't completed in time, the problem could impact negatively on Longford's ability to host crucial championship fixtures such as a high-profile All-Ireland qualifier home draw.
And so it came to pass. Longford will host Kildare in Mullingar on Saturday, which, psychologically at least, gives an advantage to Jason Ryan's team. But having defeated Clare with just 14 men, Jack Sheedy's Longford panel will be fired up despite the inconvenience.
