carney clinches it for athboy! Athboy Celtic..............................3

Oldcastle Utd...........................2

In what was essentially a match to decide which team was going to guarantee participation in division two for next season, it was Athboy Celtic that eventually came through to claim their place in a very exciting match played at the Convent Grounds.

The home got the perfect start when after only eight minutes Aaron Ryan, having being put through with a neat pass from Gary Ennis, managed to lob the on rushing keeper Shane Farrelly to put his side one up.

Gay Connell made it 2 -0 after 20 minutes with a well directed shot from 15 metres. The score remained the same until the interval.

For the early part of the second half, Athboy appeared to be content with holding their lead, and Oldcastle were coming more into the game. They were rewarded for their efforts on the hour with a superb long range shot from Oisin Kiernan.

The goal sparked Athboy into a renewed urgency, and seven minutes later their two advantage was restored, when Colm Carney rounded the keeper and coolly slotted home when faced with a one and one after breaking the Oldcastle offside trap.

Conor Somers gave Oldcastle hope with 10 minutes remaining to make it 2 -3 , but with his side having to score two more for the vital win, they ran out of time and face the drop back to division three, with Ahboy hoping to build a side for challenging at the other end of the Table for next Season's campaign.
