Button hoping Hamilton stays

F1: JENSON BUTTON has dropped a broad hint he would prefer for Lewis Hamilton to remain his team-mate at McLaren next season.

Ahead of this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton yesterday pre-empted further questioning over his future by saying there was no news.

It is understood Hamilton will deliver his answer by mid-October, potentially prior to the Japanese Grand Prix in two weeks' time.

As far as Button is concerned, he continues to see Hamilton as the ideal yardstick against whom he can measure himself.

Button said: "I purposefully moved to McLaren because I wanted a competitive team-mate, and it's always fun judging yourself.

"Over a weekend, if you have a good day and you are in front of your team-mate then it means a lot more, and you really enjoy that moment."

Five-star Trump heads off Allen

Snooker: World number two Judd Trump won five frames in a row for the second day in succession to reach today's quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

Trump trailed Barry Hawkins 3-0 in the first round before battling back to win and he recovered from a similar position against Northern Ireland's Mark Allen yesterday.

Allen took the opening two frames but Trump found his form with a century in the third and took the next two as well.

Trump completed the win with the next two frames for 5-3, and is joined in the quarter-finals by Ali Carter, who crushed Stephen Maguire 5-0.

Foden ruled out of autumn Tests

RUGBY UNION: Ben Foden will miss England's QBE autumn internationals after it was confirmed last night he requires surgery on damaged ankle ligaments.

The Northampton full-back suffered the injury playing against Bath last Friday and he is expected to be sidelined for between 10 and 12 weeks.

Mike Brown and Alex Goode both started Tests at full-back on the summer tour of South Africa and will be the leading contenders for the 15 jersey.
