Brave Bríde fall at final hurdle

Pres SS, Thurles 3

JUST taking part in yesterday's FAI Schools First Year Girls All-Ireland Cup Final was success to Coláiste Bríde manager John O'Shea after his side's 3-0 loss to Presentation Secondary School, Thurles.

An early opener from Shonagh Cleary and two late second-half strikes condemned the Enniscorthy school to a fourth national heartbreak in three years.

After defeat in the final of this competition and the semi-finals of the Minor Cup in 2010, Bríde were seen off by Moville in the Junior Cup semi-finals this year.

With a second Leinster double in three years secured heading into yesterday's showpiece in Athlone, Bríde were hit with a sucker-punch on seven minutes when Cleary's shot wriggled over the line.

Derbhla Doyle went closest to an equaliser early in the second half before the brave Wexford school were caught on the counter attack by the same player on 47 minutes and Norah Kennedy wrapped up the scoring with the last kick of the game.
