Brammeier gears up to atone

National Time Trial defending champ Matt Brammeier (Omega Pharma-Quickstep), also holder of the National Road Race Championship title, floundered on the roads of Cahir, Co Tipperary, on Thursday evening when he could do no better than finish fifth in the 35km race against the clock.

The designated distance for the title in Cahir was not the usual 40km as a glitch forced an eleventh-hour alteration to the distance.

Tomorrow, he hopes for better luck in the road race, which will be based in Clonmel.

The former member of the An Post/Sean Kelly Team will face a number of his former team-mates, but his main threat will be Nicholas Roche (Ag2r La Mondiale), a former winner.

Roche, in recent weeks, has regained his form with a top ten Tour de Suisse placing.

Brammeier came here on a mission to show the selectors of the Olympic team that his omission was a mistake.

On the strength of his showing in the time trial on Thursday, their selections appear to have have been vindicated.
