Bekele smashes record in the Park

KENENISA Bekele sounded out a warning to his Olympic rivals by smashing the course record on his way to a facile victory in the Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix Park.

The 29-year-old Olympic gold medallist came into the race on the back of a poor 2011 campaign but looked back to his best by demolishing an elite field. His winning time of 27 minutes 49 seconds smashed the previous 10k record of 28:26.

Bekele finished almost a minute ahead of Spaniard Ayad Lamdassen, with Mark Keneally the highest finishing Irish participant coming in eight place in a time of 29:23.

Linda Byrne finished sixth in the women's race, which was won by Britain's Gemma Steel.
