Barron falters in ski cross country

WINTER OLYMPICS: Ireland's PJ Barron finished in 91st place in the Olympic Men's 15km Cross Country Skiing event in Whistler.

The 20-year-old was 10 minutes 14 seconds behind Swiss gold medalist Dario Cologna in a time of 43:50.

Swiss veteran Didier Defago won the men's downhill skiiing, while the USA's Seth Westcott secured the gold in the men's snowboard-cross event.

After the death of Georgian slider Nodar Kumaritashvili last Friday, a new start position was made for the women's luge, which Germany's Tatjana Huefner won, but the slower course left sliders frustrated.

TENNIS: Ireland's Barry King yesterday crashed to a shock defeat in the first round of qualifying at the ITF Men's Futures event in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Top seed King, selected on the Ireland Davis Cup team for next month's clash with Turkey in Dublin bowed out to Bosnian Franjo Raspudic 6-1 7-6.

The 24-year-old had a 1,118 place advantage in the world rankings over Raspudic, who had previously lost five matches on the trot since last October.

King will have a chance for a consolation when he teams up with fellow Dubliner James McGee in the men's doubles.
