Anticipation grows ahead of Raheny '5'

At the time of writing, a thaw has set in, but, with the weather making fools of us all these days, predicting what races will go ahead over the next few weeks is difficult.

Having said that, we can reason- ably anticipate that normal winter conditions will have resumed by the time the last weekend in January comes around. That's the date fixed for two big races -- the Axa Raheny '5' in Dublin and the Quantum Dungarvan '10' in Co Waterford.

Last year's 25th Axa Raheny '5' was the biggest yet and a huge entry is again expected for the first major race of the New Year. Over the years Raheny has developed a well-deserved reputation as one of the best organised races on the calendar.

For the €20 entry fee, all participants get the unique Raheny plaque, a packed goody bag, chip timing and hot tea afterwards.

Registration couldn't be easier -- you are sure to bump into the Raheny Roadshow registration team over the next few weekends.

Alternatively, you can register online at www.rahenyshamrock.com until the evening before the race.

Hugely popular are the two children's runs -- 800m for 8- to 12-year-olds, and the Raheny Mile for the 13 to 16 age group. Entry is €5, with medals for all finishers, plus prizes for the first three boys and girls in both races.

Entry for the Dungarvan race has already broken all records and strictly no entries will be taken after next Monday's deadline.

For the €20 fee, all participants will get a substantial goody bag including a Dri-fit running top. With a €3,000 prize fund, €400 will go to the winning man and women with a further €250 on offer if the course records are broken.

Sandis Bralitis of organising club West Waterford holds the men's record of 50.08, while Rosemary Ryan's time of 57.27 is the women's record.

As well as spots galore down the field, prizes are on offer in veteran, junior, team and wheelchair categories.
