mooney bags 'nure a point

In the end a share of the points was a fitting outcome after Cabinteely and Terenure produced an exciting slice of Major Division South action last Monday night at Kilboggin Park.

A first-half goal by Lisa Donnelly handed the home side the lead, but Cathy Mooney popped up on the hour to bring the game back to parity and that's the way it stayed.

Donnelly's opening goal arrived 35 minutes into a free-flowing first half and it was plucked straight off route one. A long-range clearance from goalkeepr Niamh Haskins caught the 'Nure defence napping and released the Cabo striker into the clear.

Orla O'Brien raced from her goal, but Donnelly skipped by the 'keeper's last-gasp tackle and calmly stroked home from a tight angle into the empty net.

Prior to the goal it was Terenure who were building up the momentum, playing a neat brand of passing football and pushing Cabinteely onto the back foot.

In contrast, the home side's more direct approach was troublesome for the 'Nure and both Donnelly and fellow striker Jess Lav had caused O'Brien to fret with a couple of early chances on the visitors' goal.

Terenure, who have already defeated Cabinteely this season, needed to be patient and finally drew level just 15 pressure-filled minutes into the second half.

Full back Jen White, an exciting, attack-minded defender, clipped the ball into the home area. Rachel Burke managed to control in front of goal, but the ball broke away from the midfielder's influence.

Luckily for Terenure, Mooney was alive inside the area and swooped on the loose ball and steered home by Haskins from six yards out.

The visitors pressed forward in the closing stages as they looked for a winner and Jean Clery was unlucky when snatching a shot just inches over the crossbar.

In the end, though, neither side could find the elusive winner.
