Memorable day out for McManus

Yesterday's Guinness Galway Hurdle was a great race and I was delighted for JP McManus winning the event for the first time as this was undoubtedly a race he always wanted to win.

Thomas Edison was sent off favourite and AP (McCoy) got a lovely run and he's just a good horse who has obviously had his problems as first time out he beat multiple Grade One winner Champagne Fever in a bumper.

Champagne Fever went on to win twice at Cheltenham and is a very good horse and Thomas Edison has repaid the patience of connections who kept the faith with him over the last couple of years. It's not too often everything goes to plan in a race like the Galway Hurdle but it did yesterday for Thomas Edison and he pulled it off. The five-year-old Bayan ran a blinder back in second and that is now the fifth consecutive year that Gordon Elliott has had a horse placed in the race and Bayan has been a brilliant servant.

There was no excuses in the race though and there's no doubt the best horse won on the day and if he stays right now he'll be a horse we hear plenty more about in the future.

I was looking forward to riding Rosetub in the last race but unfortunately that horse was withdrawn earlier in the day so we'll have to go again some other day with him.

There was plenty of style on show yesterday at the races and again I can't finish up the week without saying what a great job Galway have done with the crowd up well over 6,000 on the same day last year. Thankfully, the rain stayed off, so everyone was happy.

Looking ahead to the weekend and tomorrow we have a big competitive handicap hurdle worth a nice few quid and I think it could be a good weekend for trainer John McConnell.

Today I fancy McConnell's Orgilgo Bay and tomorrow I think Lindenhurst has a big shout in the second race. He's a nice four-year-old who they thought enough of to run in the Triumph Hurdle and don't rule him out tomorrow.

I'd say Willie's horse Totally Dominant who runs in Sunday's winners' bumper is a good animal and is worth keeping an eye on also, although it is a good winners' bumper and a race that is sure to throw up plenty of future success stories.
